last week my jul 2012 mbp 15inch wouldnt power on, probably shorted out while plugging a usb device in. I tried several times to do a SMC reset to no avail. so I popped it open, removed battery, held power button, put it all back together and it powered on just fine. Can anyone explain why the SMC reset didnt work, I really dont want to remove the battery if this happens again.

If you think your battery shorted out, an SMC procedure keyed by Phil Schiller's own fingers wouldn't power on the laptop.

I ran apple hardware test. no issues. I wonder if the power button is messed up. It powers up when you remove the battery cable and hook the magsafe in I don't even have to hit the button

it appears that the power button no longer works, so its no big deal unless I power it off, I have to remove the battery to get it on
