Word 2004 - symbols have stopped displaying!

I have multiple Word documents with symbols such as up & down arrows, which as of this morning no longer *show up*. I just see a plain box character in place of all the symbols.

When I use my Macbook's "character palette" to add a character it works in Word and other programs.

But when I go to "Insert Menu --> symbol" in word, everything inserts as a plain box. Help..

Alright, solved. The Symbol font was uninstalled somehow (no idea). Installing it again made all the characters come back.
