Word 2008 slower than a Chevette

Is it just me or is Word 2008 unbearably slow to launch? I can load every application in Adobe CS3 suite in the amount of time it takes Word to open itself.

I say this not to merely bash Office, as both Excel & Powerpoint both launch very quickly. Word on the other hand...

Has anyone else noticed this and been able to speed things up? I'm extremely hesitant to download any updates from Microsoft in an attempt to "fix" problems, especially after reading some of the comments on this board

That's true. But since I installed some new fonts, it won't even boot. It just locks up, loading the fonts.

Pages? I think you mean TextEdit for those quick "what's in the document?" moments.

Not as big a deal with quick look in Leopard though.

Since it's happening after you've installed a bunch of new fonts, try to turn off Word's WYSIWYG font menu. Go into Word's preferences, and uncheck "WYSIWYG font and style menus". Many people report that this improves Word's launch time when they've got lots of fonts.

This helps a little bit. Instead of taking a full minute to launch, it only takes about 45 seconds now.

You said you haven't downloaded the updates? We've done a lot of work to improve performance across the board, including launch times. So you might want to try updating. The latest and greatest version is currently 12.1.5.
