Whenever I try to insert a new equation or edit an existing one in Word 2011, it instantly crashes. As an engineering student, this is obviously a major problem for me. Anyone know what might be going on? I've tried reinstalling already.

Your problem is not normal. However, you have not given even a hint of anything abnormal on your system. Until you do, then the best that you can hope for are random shots in the dark.

That's cause there isn't anything abnormal. ;) Absolutely no problems elsewhere in the Office software or the computer in general. I guess maybe the only "abnormality" is that I'm running an SSD, but that shouldn't affect anything.

Microsoft has released a new update (14.0.1) that improves the equation editor:

This update fixes an issue that causes Word to crash or close unexpectedly sometimes when you build an equation. The issue specifically occurs when the user clicks the Convert selection to professional or Convert selection to linear buttons on the Equation Tools tab to format the equation into a one-dimensional form for easy editing or a two-dimensional form for professional display.

While this doesn't appear to address your specific issue, it's still worth a shot.
