Word 2016 dead slow - suggestions?

I'm editting a 100 pages Word document with some track changes, but Word 2016 can now not keep up with my typing. Not that I'm a fast typist; it literally takes seconds for characters to appear. Using Word 2011 was (and is) much faster and I'm considering going back or using Word 2013 for Windows which even through a VM is much faster. Any suggestions on how to speed up Word 2016 mac, or is that flogging a dead horse?
