Word acting up

So I recently updated Office on my mac. Ever since then, Word has been acting weird. When I start a new document, the starting font is Courier. I also can not make quotation marks, instead it makes this mark (»). Any help on what could be wrong or how to fix it? Thanks.

Spell check doesn't work either... any help?

You should be able to change the default font in the Normal file. That's just a regular old Word file, but it's in a special folder. Not at my Mac, so I can't direct you to it.
