"WORD" compatible word processor needed

Hi, I've bought an iMac and need to access/edit lots of docs previously created in Microsoft WORD on a PC.
Any recommendations for a compatible word processor for a nurse on a tight budget?

free and very capable solution is open office

the point of open office is to to give a free alternative to MS Office yet be fully compatible with MS Office

Depending on the complexity of the documents Text Edit (part of the OS) may be able to open the documents. It has basic Word support...

I had tons of Word and Excel docs on my PC that I migrated to my Mac. OpenOffice 3.0 is great. But it does have some issues with .docx files. I converted all my .docx files to .doc, and I have only had a couple of documents with tables that didn't format properly in OO.
