word count in Word

How do I turn this option off? I use one document for notes for one class and I just add on everyday. This results in a very large document with many words, which results in a wait for a word count when the document opens or under reformat.

Go to Preferences > View, and then untick "Live Word Count". I think this is what you're talking about.
