So I posted this in this section because it deals with Windows / products on the Mac. I don't use boot camp or anything I just have Microsoft Office 2008 on my mac and I am looking to upgrade to 2011. Right now with '08 I can't open .doc documents on my mac using Microsoft Word they have to be saved as .docx on a windows and then I can open them on my mac. In 2011 version is this issue fixed?

I also bought Pages '09 and it doesn't open either, just trying to make the right choice.
 
Both office 2008 and 2011 open both .doc and .docx. I suspect something went wrong in your office 2008 install or something got corrupt... Can you try a reinstall?

I should mention I refuse to use .docx and always set the default to .doc. I still can't see any good reason to use .docx and I just wrote a 300 page thesis in .doc format!
