Word document

I'm trying to find a Word file. I went to File - Open Recent and scrolled through the list. All files were sitting there and available to open; however, the one I was looking for had a dotted outline of a document - white dashes in a squarish shape against the black background. The name of the document was below it. When I clicked on it the name became a long number and a message said "couldn't open." What has happened to the document and could there be a backup somewhere?

go to the actual location of the file and check. then open time machine for that folder.

Where would I find the actual file location, and where is time machine within the computer? Thanks.
