Hi there

I seem to have a continual probably that both Word and Excel talk a long time to load up. Most of my other programs do not. (I do use Final Cut Pro that takes a minute to load up but I think that is more to do with the size of Final Cut Pro)

What seems to happen is when both Word and Excel open they seem to want to reopen dozens of old files. On occasion it may be that I close the program without saving but some of these files are files I have not used in years and it still tried to open them.'

Im running a 2017 iMac with 16G of Ram....somewhat modest but I don't think that is the issue with Mac and Excel.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

They are much slower to open on my computer too. I don't think it has anything to do with previously opened docs though. I don't recall which discussion it was in (although I'm sure you could search for it) but someone with a lot more knowledge that myself explained why Office takes so long to open (or maybe it was why the applications are so large). It has something to do with the fact that they have the normal Mac menu bar & then another menu bar that mimics the windows one (as well as some other similar things) and that causes the programs to be larger than they otherwise would be.

Thanks MK.......when you open your word/excel do you have old documents open up? Part of my issue is when I open excel for example it will want to open about 40 old files. It's almost as if I had them all open(which I would never have had 40 open) and unexpected shut the power off on the computer, so excel has saved them in an effort to prevent me from losing data. But one of the files it always opens is at least 3 year old.

I haven't noticed it opening old documents, but it does always take a SUPER long time to load the first time by double-clicking a document in Finder. Opening the app straight from the dock is much faster. Once I do that, then opening files by double-clicking them speeds right up.

I don't have old docs pop up. It just brings up a main menu (Office 2019) that shows my recent docs in a list, but doesn't try to open anything.

What kind of storage, SSD or spinner harddrive?

On my 2017 iMac, it took about 54 icon bounces for Excel to load from the 1TB harddrive. After upgrading to a 1TB external SSD (can't open the iMac to install it internally) and booting from that, Excel now takes 5 icon bounces to load.
