I am writing a thesis in word (2011) with many, many footnotes that require too much space. Therefore I would like to organise them in two rows:

not:
------------
f
f
f
f

like this:
------------
f f
f f

However, I have no idea what I have to do and would be very grateful for help.

The only way I know how to do this is to arrange your main text into two columns. When you do this, the footnotes* will follow that pattern.

In general, if your footnotes take up too much space, the practical solution is to switch to using endnotes.
