Word Keeps Crashing--deleting preference file

My word program crashes frequently. I saw an older thread about Word crashing, and a lot of members suggested deleting the preference file. I would like to try that, but I'm not sure about how you do it.
I have a mac ibook, model M6497. The operating system is Mac OS X Version 10.4.11.
