Word Work Menu Issue

How do I remove documents from the work menu (v.X)? MS Word says "z+option+minus" then cursor becomes minus sign and one can remove the items, but I can't seem to get this to work. I've tried every variation on this but seem to be missing something. Thanks for any help.
