I'm 55, semi-retired, a lifelong user of Apple products, and have a professional background in sales and technical support. I can't help but be intrigued with the idea of working at one of our local Apple Stores, largely for fun, especially as a Genius. Am I nuts?

I would work at an apple store. I work full time but i think it would be a cool part time thing

If there's anyone here who has experience working in Apple Retail and can offer a relevant perspective, please do.

Anybody willingly wanting to work in retail is nuts yes.... I see the kind of abuse that retail employees endure from entitled customers, know-it-alls, and Karens.

I applaud you for wanting to continue employment. I am not yet retired and have been working for 50 years. If you can put up with retail nonsense, hours, all manner of b/s you can certainly apply and see where it goes.

I've applied at my local Apple store a few times because, like you, I think it would be a neat experience.

My wife, who has been working retail since 2007, says that it is pure hell some days and that I wouldn't survive 5 minutes.

I have not personally worked in an Apple Store, but know three people who have. Two were regular floor employees (I don't know Apple's official title), one was a Lead Genius in a large "flagship" store. Their comments on the experience were all basically aligned: It's a bit like really liking pizza, so you decide to go work in a pizza restaurant. Eventually, you start to really hate pizza, and you're still working in a restaurant. Put another way: yeah, it's the Apple Store, for what that's worth, but you work in a mall in a very public-facing job for a very middling wage.

All three are people I would say are well aligned to the concept of helping others. They liked the opportunity to solve problems, and had the right personality to weather the general culture of rudeness and entitlement that people who work in retail environments are subject to daily. The Apple Store is no different in that regard—people are just so rude. You have to have a very thick skin.

Two worked there for under two years. One for 4 years (the lead Genius). It's not a place people tend to stay at very long.
