working with screen close ?

is there a way for my MacBook to download files with the screen close down?
if so how do I set it up were do I go ?

if you plug in an external keyboard i believe it wont go to sleep if you close the lid.

Also, i seem to remember an app (maybe called insomnia, or something like that) that will force the mac to stay awake with the lid closed.
