I have noticed each and every time that I click on the workout icon and start my exercise timer, The time exercise does not match what is on the Activity icon. For example, my timer shows that I exercise for 30 minutes, but later when I look at the activity monitor it only shows 20 minutes. Is there something I’m missing here?

Yes, I noticed that too. It seems it will only count as minutes in the activity monitor if your heart rate is high enough. A bit annoying if you don’t want to do a hard workout.

I've also found that it depends on the type of workout. For an outdoor walk, I can do 30 minutes, and not get a single minute, but a (slow) yoga workout for 30 minutes will track all 30 minutes. Very helpful for those days when I need to complete my circle.

You just need to pick a type of workout that gives you credit for exercise even when you aren't moving. Those include the yoga workout and any of the "other" work.

Also, the exercise minutes in the Activity rings will increase if you move vigorously even when you haven't started a workout. Take off your watch and shake it hard for a bit, and your exercise minutes will go up.

Like others said, certain workouts, such as Outdoor Walk, Hiking, and High Intensity Interval Training only give you exercise minutes when your heart is elevated above a certain level. For that reason, I will choose Cross Training most of the time as that counts the total exercise time regardless of heart rate.

Thanks guys but I like to walk briskly and my heart rate for some reason doesn’t go up high enough for it to register. I’m 75 years old and will not do very intensive workouts other than eating. It doesn’t register either except on the scale.

Its defiantly to do with your heart rate. The main thing is even if its not 100% accurate, its a way to monitor and increase your activity. It's certainly working for me.
