This on an Apple Watch Ultra 1 (11.4) paired to an iPhone 14 Pro (18.4) running Workoutdoors 5.5.

I'm a long time user of Workoutdoors and love it dearly.

Within the last few days it has started generating inappropriate pause/resume announcements during a continuing workout.

Yesterday: "pause, resume, pause, resume, pause, resume".

Today: "pause, resume, pause, resume, resume, resume, resume, workout finished"

In neither case did the app actually pause or finish the workout. Workoutdoors continued to display elapsed time, speed, distance, heart rate, etc. In both cases I checked the GPS indicator which showed four bars and the watch was still charged to over 70%.

When I mentioned this to my wife she said, "Oh, yeah, that's what my watch did just before it failed."

So, is my Ultra in the throes of death or is something else going on?

[edit] Note that I don't think this is a problem with the app. I think the app is getting bad data from the watch.

I don’t use that app but I don’t know that anyone here can answer your question.
But afaik the developer of that app is pretty active here in the workoutdoors thread, maybe you should post your story there or alert them at least to this thread?

And maybe you should use one of the Apple workouts to see what results/behavior you get there?

And lastly, you might do an up-pair/re-pair and set the watch up as new, not a restore. There is a possibility of some corruption that a restored might bring back.

At first I was going to post this issue in the Workoutdoors thread, but since it seemed unrelated to the app I posted it here. Thanks for your troubleshooting suggestions. I'll try Apple's workout app tomorrow.

As suggested I used the Apple Workout app this morning. I was careful to set it up as close to my Workoutdoors setup as possible: auto pause/resume, Voice Feedback enabled (Siri reads workout alerts).

But, the Workout app didn't announce any alerts at all during the ride. No real or phantom pause/resume alerts. No auto pause alert when we stopped for coffee. (The app did pause the workout, it just didn't announce it.) So, we don't know if the Workout app would have announced the phantom alerts or not.

Or, I can just assume that this weirdness was a one-off occurrence.

In any event it will remain one of many Unsolved Mysteries of Apple Devices. Perhaps an Apple TV+ series is in order.
