Worldwide App Store downloads grew 2.4 percent to hit 8.6 billion in the first quarter of 2022, according to data shared today by Sensor Tower (via TechCrunch). Between the App Store and the Google Play store, there were 36.9 billion total app downloads, an increase of 1.4 percent.

As there are far more Android users than iPhone users, there were a much higher number of apps downloaded on Android devices, with Google Play downloads hitting 28.3 billion during the quarter.

TikTok was the most downloaded app on the iPhone and the iPad worldwide, surpassing 70 million App Store downloads. YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook were the other top downloaded apps, which is unchanged from the year-ago quarter.

TikTok has been downloaded more than 3.5 billion times since its launch, and it is the first non-Meta app to hit that milestone. In fact, since the beginning of 2018, no app has surpassed TikTok in downloads, according to Sensor Tower.

As for games, Subway Surfers, Wordle (the original from 2016), Coloring Match, PUBG Mobile, and Roblox were the most downloaded apps. Subway Surfer had more than 15 million downloads during the quarter.

Is there a chart to show creative and business APPS?

Just showing games and social media downloads does not show much.

alot of these are FREE downloads.

Android has lots of FREE downloads too

Yes they do. Holy crap!

I knew it was a lot... but 28 billion downloads... in just 3 months?

Well when there that many Android phones on Earth... I guess I shouldn't be surprised. But still.

Does anyone have a purchases and/or revenue chart? I'd love to see how that compares to free downloads.

???

Maybe there just isn’t any more apps. They refused to respond and Apple deleted all their apps.

Update: ooooohhhhh, I thought it said the App Store is down worldwide. Meh same thing.

The report is full of interesting information, clearly displayed. I thought that the chart showing top countries by download was particularly interesting, both in the volumes shown for the top 10 countries, as well as for the differences between the App Store and Google Play in each country. Notice that China is not present in the top 10 because Google Play is not available in China:

I find it interesting that the Philippines is number 10… which means that every single country in the EU’s iOS downloads are less than that.

Sensor Tower produced the data and they define what they count in the download numbers. Not sure what say Apple would have over the data Sensor Tower is presenting.
oh ok, apple has zero control over the numbers output by their connectors and have zero reasons to inflate the numbers. oh ok.

This doesn't help Apple's cause. To argue that opening up the App Store to 3rd parties will just diminish the iOS experience is a pretty tough argument when Google has an open market and still gets 28 billion downloads just from Google Play alone. It's just a matter of time now... Looking forward to the day I can downloading anything I want from anywhere I want onto my iPhone, just like I do on my Mac.

PS, My Mac is doing just fine.

Subway Surfers still rocking it! I remember when it first came out and streams of people were coming to me with clones and business plans. They all failed.

With all those downloads you would think that by now Apple would have fixed issues such as broken search and fake reviews. Some instances are breath taking from a developer's point of view.

Example.

If I search for "Chess" I get "Chess-Chess With Friends" at No2 that has 1000s of fake reviews and a perfect 5 score even tho' you cannot even try it without paying $30.

This is made even worse by the fact that "Chess - Clash of Kings" is running an Apple search ads campaign at around $5 per install or more but are ranked LOWER. So they are spending money trying to beat an app that they can never beat due to fake reviews.

So ... Apple wins completely here ... they get loads of $30 subscriptions and poor "Clash of Kings" using their search ads service trying to win an impossible battle.

Agreed... the App Store needs a lot of TLC.

But it's funny how some people are excited by the possibility of apps and games being downloaded and installed from the web... I.E sideloading.

Because we know it's impossible to build a website with fake reviews that offers unchecked apps full of scammy malware.
