Does anyone have a link for the details around this feature?

does a data plan need to be loaded and active for the feature to work. Or is simply having a cellular version sufficient?

My understanding is a gps only model can dial sos in home country and abroad if it’s near a iPhone

the older cellular versions (series 3 and 4) could make a sos call in the home country only (but this means a data plan on the watch would have been required)?

grateful for any help

Series 5 can call emergency sos without an iPhone or a data plan. You do need a cellular Apple Watch though.

Have you tried Apple Support? A quick search found this page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206983

Per referenced article, a cellular plan being required varies by country/region. In the US, a cellular plan is not required.
