I am looking to buy a 27inch iMac, but planning to buy with 8gb memory, so that i can upgrade RAM myself. However after clicking a few links to amazon from a few different popular youtube review videos, I've found a handful of people saying that the Ram basically messed up their iMacs after installation. I'm very concerned about buying Ram from a third party now, as I'm unsure which websites will surely sell the correct Ram i need for a 2019 27 inch iMac. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

Thankyou.

The RAM upgrade on a current iMac is as easy as it has been on any computer ever built.

I would buy from a reputable brand - Crucial.com, Other World Computing, etc.

Don't worry OWC has the RAM you want.........works no problem:):)

Maybe a site that specializes in "correct" RAM?
or, maybe
(OWC is usually a good choice, too!)

I buy RAM from Crucial usually and never had a problem on my iMacs it’s been a long time since I last did it though but it’s probably still as easy as back then.

I got 64GB from Other World Computing (4 x 16) for my 2019 and have had zero problems with it. I have bought RAM from them for years for different Macs, and on the one or two occasions that a piece of RAM failed OWC replaced it no questions asked. I would always recommend them for RAM.

If you're not confident, just stick with Crucial, OWC or another reputable supplier who sell upgrade kits specifically for specific Mac models. Don't cheap out (even the big brands are cheaper than Apple's ridiculous upgrade prices) but don't get seduced by premium-priced RAM with go-faster stripes and flashing lights either - even if it is "better" the performance gains will be marginal.

There's literally only about 3 companies actually making RAM - Crucial are the "retail" arm of one of those manufacturers (Micron) - last time I got RAM from Crucial it was the 8GB version of the same 4GB Micron sticks that came with the Mac.

I recently upgraded the RAM in my 27" iMac (late 2014) from 16 GB to 32 GB using PNY RAM purchased from Best Buy. Easy to install, works fine, no problems.

One minor possible confusion in purchasing RAM is that the iMac uses what is sometimes identified as 'laptop' memory rather than 'desktop' memory, so be very sure that you purchase the correct RAM model for your computer.
