The iPhones speakerphone is utterly useless. I have to use it a lot now because of the horrors of the proximity sensor (still not fixed with 4.1). But its barely useful at all. If theres ANY backround noise, i cant hear it. And i know the phone can be louder than this, my ringtones nearly blow my ears off. Why is the speakerphone so low?

Sounds like you've got an issue, especially if you've got an iPhone 4. My speakerphone is plenty loud. Loud enough that I can easily use it outdoors in wind with no problems (thank you noise canceling mic).

IPhone 4 is better speaker phone compare to my previous iPhones. And it's louder than my iPad.

If you're not happy with your device, just sell it and move on.

Jeez, another "if you don't like it just sell it or return it" reply. Really useful.

I feel your pain, OP. That's always been my #1 complaint with my 3GS speakerphone. It's only useful when I'm indoors and sometimes, even then I have to actually point the bottom of the phone towards my ear to really be able to hear it (which defeats the purpose of using the speakerphone in the first place).

Like you, I wonder why the ring tones can be so loud, yet the speakerphone sucks. And it's certainly not my hearing, as I hear just fine.

If you think that's quiet, try the one on the original iPhone.

OP, like you, due to the proximity sensor issues I have also had to utilize speakerphone much more often than usual and found the performance to be quite inadequate during most conversations. So, now I just use headphones most of the time to talk.

Are you guys aware there is a separate volume for the ringtone and the phone conversation? You probably are but just in case, try turning up the volume while you are in the conversation if you haven't already.

I have a 99 Mustang GT and I can hear anyone over the speaker phone over the roar of the engine with the windows down. I'd say that's pretty impressive.

I hated the original iPhone speaker, and the 3G was marginally better.

The 4 is much, much better for me. Way improved.

One of my biggest issues with the first two generations of the iPhone were the weak speaker.

The 3GS was crap, but the iPhone is perfect. I was always having issues with my last phone, no such ones with this one.

The noise canceling microphone improves audio quality for the person you're on the phone with, not for you.

Pretty much all iPhone models have had horrendous speaker phone performance. This is one area apple can improve greatly on.

OP you're right on point

My iPhone 4 speakerphone absolutely crushes my old 3GS in terms of loudness and clarity, for both parties on the call, actually. Sorry you're having issues, it's possibly bum hardware, maybe get it swapped or checked out at the Apple Store?

Can people stop complaining. It is getting very old. I know a few people with iphone 4s who have no issues at all. It is not every phone. If you don't like the phone, sell it and stop complaining. No one here wants to hear complaints.
