Worth buying used?

We cannot afford a new mac. We are considering buying a used iMac (2008)--can get a used one for so much less than a refurbished one (even though there's obviously greater risk of problems). Can you purchase Apple Care for used computer and is it worth doing so?

AppleCare can only be purchased while the original warranty is in effect (1 year from purchase.)
