So what are the chances of an apple store having any in stock for me to exchange my black phone for a white?

Can I even exchange an online order in store without calling apple first?
 
They wont exchange, you have to return then buy the other one. If using eligibility to upgrade then have to wait a wait till it reverts back to your account.
 
It's always a hassle at Apple.

Last January, I bought a 16GB at BestBuy just because that was all they has. I exchanged it when they had 64 and it was no problem, even at 7.30 PM on a Sunday night. They just had to call Verizon to get the phones transferred.
 
Even if they did an exchange, it would be for the same color & GB,, so best bet is to return & buy again

I finally got ahold of my local store and she said the exchange would be fine but they were out of stock of that model.
 
Return your phone now, so you stay within the exchange period and wait until your white comes in.
