So….if I put an AirTag in a car I have in storage about 5 miles from my house, is there a way it can notify me if it gets stolen / moved outside of its current location? I am not always there to know if it’s gone so not sure if this would work.

Put tag in notify when found mode. Now , every iPhone that pings it is going to report an approximate location. And don’t be surprised that the location accuracy is off by a significant amount. But you will get hits all around the storage facility so you can be pretty sure that the car is there.

Then if the car is stolen and moved, you will start getting notices that will add up to car is stolen.

Now, you will have a short amount of time to act as Apple’s anti stalking algorithm will kick in and start alerting the thief (if they have an iPhone) that a tag is following them.

But at least you will know that the car has been moved.

So every time an iPhone pings it in storage I’m going to get a notification?

Does the storage company not have security and insurance? All the airtag will do is alert you once the horse has left the barn. The police don't really take auto theft seriously so all for not. I think the anti stalking notification will limit the effectiveness of these. If an item is stolen, a thief will just disable or toss the airtag. Maybe on a pet, to recover or find a lost child

I bought one of These , I placed an AirTag in it and taped it hidden in the trunk under the carpet, under the spare wheel. The notification sound is barely barely audible in the car and once it is started and rolling, you can't really hear it.

Yes, of course you can toggle on/off but then you would miss event. The sound is not what will alert the thief. Their iPhone is going to light up.

Again, the notification comes from location of iPhone not tag. So a iPhone in a speeding car that has a cell delay to the mother ship could easily report the location 1/2 - 1 mile away.

So, don’t assume that your car is stolen when you receive proximity alerts.
