The resolution on the dell was reduced to 800X600?

I dont have the adapter so I can't test it. I assume the answer is absolutely not, but I don't understand enough about the science of the resolution versus screen area versus memory specifics to answer that question.

Has anyone tried anything if this sort?

The short answer I believe is yes. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the iBook doest even hava a VGA out port, what it does have is a composite out (from the headphone jack), my clamshell iBook had one, so if your's does too you just plug it into the composite input of the monitor, and it will treat it as any video signal.
