What I really want is a 16 inch MacBook Pro, but it's not currently offered with the M1 chip. I want the M1 chip because it makes the whole notebook run cooler. I'm used to using a 15.4 inch MacBook Pro all these years. And another thing: I've heard the MacBook Air doesn't have as bright of a screen as the MacBook Pro; is that an issue?

just wait for the 16" MBP M1X laptop.

Just wait, since I feel you don’t have the pressure from anywhere forcing you to make a decision now.
Patience will be rewarded.

I went from a 2019 15MBP to a M1 MBA and I am very happy, my screen brightness is at maybe 1/3 and there are NO fans…

That's a ludicrous thing for them to say. Apple's not going to just cut their larger laptops from their lineup. October event; 16" MacBook Pro is inbound
I found the thread. It's Mr. Blacky who thinks the 16 inch MacBook Pro with the M1 will never happen:

I went from a 2011 15” MBP to a 2015 13” MBA. Most of my usage was docked with a 27” display. When traveling the 13” screen was a little limiting but I don’t do a lot of multitasking so usually only have a single app open on the screen. Any Mac display is fine indoors. Outdoors the brighter screens can make a big difference.

If you need something right now, why aren't you looking at the M1 MBP rather than the M1 MBA? The M1 MBP has advantages over the MBA version. If you can wait, of course it would be best to hold off on anything until we see what might be offered in the next couple of months.....

I was in the same situation. I use a 16" Windows laptop for work but I've always preferred Apple for personal use and I needed a new laptop, got fed-up of waiting for a 16" M1 Pro announcement and bought the 13" M1 Air. So glad I did. It's a shockingly good machine: light, quiet, blazingly fast, no brightness issues and TBH I'm not really noticing the reduced screen size much at all.

I'm a videographer, so I wouldn't consider the Air for editing, but rather the 13" MBP. I'm waiting until a 16" MBP comes out to trade in my M1 mini. My step daughter just uses her Air for school work and loves it. She HATES her school issued Chromebook.

Using my own direct experience I'll say hang on. There were rumours of an M1 MBA when I picked up my 2020 MBA in late spring 2020. If I'd only hung on for a few months I'd have saved myself from getting the dog I bought.
There are no heat issues but it is so slow and laggy. (i5, 8g ram, 256g) If I cursor down to bring up the hidden bar at the bottom it can sometimes take several seconds. WTF? If I am on a website and want to respond to someone's text, waiting or trying a few times for it to respond is unacceptable.
It is laggy and jumpy when scrolling on forums and say, Instagram, etc. IMO, I think the trackpad is too large or whatever. I always used a small area on my prior Macbook and navigating across to right click seems real far. Is that something new? I'm a crappy typist and always end up dragging the edge of my palm on the TP and screwing with the cursor position. I never remember experiencing that with my late-2008 Macbook. I find the TP too sensitive at times but under sensitive other times. I dislike it but always loved  trackpads until now. The battery life is not real great also.
At this stage I am holding out to get an MBP to replace this mutt. I don't want to even sell it and foist it upon someone else. I think I will just give it to my granddaughter. She'll appreciate it. Maybe this is how they ARE, but if so, that means MBP for me. Only this time I am going to wait for the new 14" with the M1X whenever that shows. I understand the MBAs with the M1 are better but I'm going to spring for an MBP. Another thing that bites me all the time, and just did, is slowness to respond to move and reset the cursor position when typing. I move it and continue typing but start typing only to find out it was slow to respond and I'm typing where I was before I attempted to move it. That is too annoying. Having to pop the bucks to replace this slug really pisses me off given it is barely 1 1/2 years since I got it. For my use I thought an MBA should have been adequate, but mine constantly annoys me. And I am a real minimalist. I do only the basic stuff and it is is a constant PITA. Enough of a pain that I won't put up with it and will drop the $2K+to put it in my rearview mirror. Sorry for the rant, folks. S

Technology will keep evolving and changing. No matter what you buy it will be outdated with months after purchase. What you need to do is keep in mind, what do I need it for and how long will it fulfill my needs. I still use a 2011 MBP for my wife who has nothing more than internet needs.
