I'm thinking of using time machine on my mbp 13 with a mybook 1tb external hdd, is there a chance the external will slow down my mbp?

No it won't. I don't get where you people get these ideas.

Not really, though USB is an interface, that uses the CPU, thus big and long data transfers might introduce some minuscule lag, but that will probably happen anyway, due to the internal HDD being written to or read from during such activity.
