Currently, I have a 2.4ghz Macbook. It's in great shape and has served me well.

I have an opportunity to by a 15" MacBook Pro, but it's an older model... the A1286, also with a 2.4ghz processor.

I really like the unibody, and I like the slightly bigger machine... but I really, really like that it should have a back lite keyboard.

I can buy the used Pro for $800. I should be able to recover a lot of that by selling off my white book and the extra NIB battery I have for it.

Think I'd really be upgrading, or just pushing stuff around for no reason?

$800 sounds like an incredible deal to me if its a 2.4 unibody...

You most likely would not see any day to day speed increase -- but start working on some more robust graphic stuff and you will...

I would do it, I bet you can sell your Macbook for really close to $800 if you make a nice ad with a lot of pictures and very clear desciptions of whats included.
