It would be more than sufficient for the needs you described. How long it lasts will depend largely on how well you take care of it, but it's not unreasonable to expect a good 3-5 years of use, at least.

i'd honestly pay the extra $60 for the newer version. you lose the dedicated graphics, but you get thunderbolt 2 (potential to connect to a 4k display), slightly better battery and faster flash storage.

I'm not planning to buy a 4k display any time. Would the Thunderbolt still factor in?

Factor in on what way? If you want an apple display you'll use the TB interface. If you want to use a non apple display you'll need to buy one with a mini-displayport or get an adapter.
