Down south
I have a 40mm cellular series 6 I just got in December. I think I really want a 44mm, and I can’t use cellular - for some reason, when cellular is activated, it makes the nerves in my arm get a really odd, dull, pain. I know that may sound weird, but it’s very noticeable, and starts within a few minutes of putting on my watch.

I’ll have to take a hit selling the 6, so I’m considering doing a series 5 for the 44mm.

Would you give up the additional features of the 6 for a 5?

Yep. I’m doing that right now. With the BB sale I bought 2 series 5 SS. BASICALLY GOT THEM FOR THE PRICE OF ONE AND GIVING NY SERIES 6 to my son. The feature I did not want to lose was the AOD. I never use the BO...so don’t feel l will be losing anything. 44mm is wat easier to see than the 40mm. Wouldn’t hesitate for a second to go from a series 6 40 to a 44 series 5 in SS. JUST DONT ACTIVATE THE CELLULAR. CAUSE I HAVE THE SAME TINGLING EFFECT WHEN CELLULAR IS ON. WHEN ITS OFF NO ISSUES.

I wouldn’t because of the improved battery life and WiFi improvements of the 6. I’d also not want to lose the brighter AOD. I have a series 5, but I’d love to have those things.

That’s anxiously just me. If none of that matters to you, go for it.

My other son has both a series 6 and a series 5. Battery life is very similar and there is no discernible difference in AOD. This is in Az where you need a bright AOD to combat the sun. Can’t speak to WiFi differences. Will be able to tomorrow when my series 5 comes in.

The only additional feature I could discern was the blood oxygen measurement. Stayed with my AW5 44mm and bought a pulse oximeter for $25.

I’ve thought about this, I would not Downgrade.
Newer CPU (4&5 have the same)
faster charging is a boon
brighter aod is noticeable to me vs 5
‘better haptics for timer & alarm
blood o2 is mostly a gimmick.
however I bought mine on release day when the series 5 was only $100 cheaper.
downgrading Is different than buying the last years model initially.

Oh yeah 5ghz WiFi is also a plus (on paper). I regularly get hmmm sorry from Siri when I’m away from my phone but right next to the router.

Well my 5 arrived today and I set it up. Did some direct comparisons. The AOD is the same. Went out in direct sunlight to check it. I have both a 5G network and the old one. Did about 20 test for wi-fi on both networks. Again minimal difference. I could be farther away from my 5G with the series 6 than the series 5. Many people would not be walking across the street to do this so in my mind you should see no difference. Do I miss the BO...not a chance. The charging time was the same on both and with all the apps I have running they are both eating the battery at the same pace. I now have stainless and a sapphire crystal for less than my 6 cost me. A bonus is that the 5 is cellulnar so I can go that direction if I ever want to. Resale is already higher on my 5SS than my blu aluminum series 6. So another benefit.

get the 5 series over the SE in a heartbeat. Just checked and BB still has a few models at absurd prices. I am temped but the Nike for my sister, maybe I will get a 3rd one!

Trying too hard to justify your 5. No one is comparing the SE here. It’s 6 Vs 5. An inferior watch.

I have thought about a 6 aluminum vs a 5 SS on the BB deal. $510 vs $450. I've decided to stay with the 6. Screen brightness, more pronounced haptics, and BO mainly. Besides the 6 Cellular I picked up Monday; I have a 2 year old 4 SSSB to compare.

From what have read, the 5 and 6 have the same screen, which is a version of the 4, modified to have a slower refresh rate to help reduce power needs from the AOD. I can say without question my 4 is noticeably brighter at full power vs the 6.

IOS 7 allows for the screen brightness to be adjusted. I increased the full and AOD settings on the 6. Still, not quite as bright as the 4, but closer that the default setting. The 4 default is NOT all the way either.

Many reviewers comment the 6 is noticeably brighter than the 5; however, many others say "marginally", and some say no difference at all. However, with the option to adjust brightness in IOS7, I'm not sure if these are true "apples to apples" comparisons. That said, IMHO, the 6 is bright enough, close to the 4 with the setting on max, and AOD is good too.

Here's something I noticed: the display on my 6 auto adjusts to lighting conditions. Probably a setting. Moving into a very dark setting, the 6 seems actually literally dim a little, while the 4 looks like a torch by comparison. Move into very bright light, and the 6 seems to noticeably brighten, while the 4 looks more pedestrian. This makes sense: a real watch has a lume intended to make it most visible after our eyes have adjusted to the dark. A good dive watch will glow like torch for 10 - 15 minutes, then fade a bit as well, like a non-diver watch. Many real watch wearers do not want a lume that draws attention or is distracting. The AW seems to have this in mind on the 6 anyway. Maybe the 5 as well.

I really like having AOD vs the 4.

Also found that the 6 has a newer haptic module, improving sensory notifications. I have poor hearing, and that was a big feature of the AW 4 for me. I did not know about the module before getting the 6, and noticed the more robust notifications on my 6 BEFORE reading about the new module. The 5 and 4 have the same module. it's a winner for me.

I like the BO feature. While many have stated it is not all that accurate, I have also found quite a few who have found it is. The most interesting are a few detailed reviews by first responders (an PA and EMT), who say it is accurate, as long as you use it correctly, and understand what situations it is not going to be all that reliable. Apple makes no claims abiut it because it is not an FDA approved device. However, I did not know this, an FDA approved BO meter can cost several hundred dollars or more, and are not easy for the general public to buy without an Rx. The cheap ones can get at a drug store or Amazon are not FDA approved, even though some insinuate they are.

Been wearing all day, each day since Monday. Put on around 7:00 am. Has about 50% power at bed time: 10:30 - 11:00 PM usually. My 4 had around 35% typically.

Last, probably small setting things, but on the 6, it starts activities without me have to start. Like "Are you on a walk?". My 4 never did that. Also bring in BP reading from my Omron, which has BT and an app on my phone. Never set that up. Overall, feels more integrated.

I wonder if some of those settings are from watch updates. Also, comparing 6 to 4 is definitely a difference - I love the AOD.

I had a 5 prior, and really haven’t noticed a lot of differences, other than obviously the blood oxygen, but I’m just wondering if I’m nuts to go back a series to get the bigger size. I just don’t want to lose money selling the 40mm, and then have to cough up that much more to get a 6 in a 44mm.

If you take $$ completely out of it, obviously going with a 6 is better.
For me, I use my watch as a watch first, fitness tracker 2nd and that’s it. Rarely use it to play music, rarely use any other apps etc. AOD was the only feature I really wanted.

For me and my money, I went with a S5 and will hold out for a 7 or later. Best Buy has the SS for $300 off making a brand new S5 for $449. I see some people on here still rocking a Series 0, so the extra CPU or long term functionality isn’t an issue. It’s a watch, it’s not doing video editing. Lol

Hell no I love my 6

I was so disappointed to find out that the “brighter” screen on the Series 6 was only in a specific situation. When in sleep mode outdoors.

When indoors, sleep mode on the 5 & 6 is the same. When outside in bright sunshine, wake mode is the same on the 5 & 6.

The improved outdoor glanceability was a game changer for me as a cyclist. So was the quick charging and better battery life vs the 5. I actually tried Garmin because of how bad my 5 was during outdoor exercise and worrying all the time about the battery once I started sleep tracking. Since I sold the 5 to try the Garmin, when I came back to Apple, it was with a 6. when the 6 came out, it seemed to me to not be worth the upgrade, but it turns out I was quite wrong given how I use the watch.

I have great battery life with my 5. I use it all day long and at the end of the day I still have more than 50% battery left

Do you use GPS or exercise daily? Do you use AOD? If the answer to any of those is yes, I just don’t know how in the world it could be possible for you to end the day with over 50%.

Interesting about the better haptics on the series 6

I didn’t notice myself; have both a space black SS 5 and blue aluminum 6

now that it’s been mentioned I think it is noticeable when I consider it

how long do you think the 5 will be supported for? Can it go at least 2 years from today?

I've found two things noticeably better than the Series 5: battery life and quicker charging times. Being able to get through more of a day without worrying about battery life is quite useful, and being able to quickly top it up means it's on my wrist more of the time as well. The Blood Oxygen sensor is interesting but I don't find I use it that much.

As @orion1234 said the battery life and quick charge are really nice.

That said, I upgraded my S3 to an S6 and since then have also picked up two S5’s in different finishes, to go along with the S6.

In day to day use, there is no real difference between them for me. I don’t miss the S6 when wearing the S5 and vice versa.

I was going to upgrade to the S6 from the S4, but saw the sale on the S5 at Best Buy and went with that. A stainless steel for $459? Yes, please! I like the AOD, for sure. It's snappier. S6 just isn't a great upgrade. Neither is the S5 from the S4, really...but I can get $200 for this watch...not a bad upgrade cost.

If by supported you mean software, the S3 is still supported and was released in Sept 2017

Because they are still selling the S3 lets assume it will get OS8 but not 9. This would be 5 years of software support.

S5 was release in Sept 2019, so 2024... ( but who knows)

Chances are you will need a new battery and it will be too slow for your liking before it doesn't get supported.

Some people on this forum traded from an S0 to an S5 which is impressive. This is the benefit of Stainless Steel. The screen will still be mostly pristine after 5 years.

Oooh, would love improved haptics. I live by my alarms throughout the day that marks the beginning and end of my half hour zoom sessions.
