Would you like this icon placed in the task bar for the iPad? I'm thinking to the left of the battery meter.

I would. I find myself pressing the volume rocker sometimes just see if the volume is off, low, moderate, or loud. I think it should work like it does on the mac, with no lines meaning muted, 1 line for low, etc.

Big time yes. It's a pain to mess with the volume button, especially if my case is on.

Plenty of space, why not?

I like this too... maybe with a down arrow in the lower right hand corner opening up access to a couple more sound options. :)

After over a year of daily "usability tests" on my iPad, I concur with the OP...volume indicator icon would be great.

Someone should make an app for that. Although I'm almost sure someone tried, but it was pulled as duplicating existing functions.

Apps don't have accessbto the top status bar, nor is there any published API forvadding functionality.

Maybe in iOS 5 (widgets).

If your volume rocker keys are hard to get to, another option is to double tap the home key and scroll to the left on your multi-tasking bar... but yeah that is a lot more of a hassle than having the indicator there.

Like very much. Also wish the iPad 2 speaker was located at the top, rather than at the bottom.

I don't know about the top, but where it is now is inconvenient if you're laying that edge against a bed or yourself. It also means if you play a game or something in landscape mode, you get a lot of sound out of one side and not the other.

There is no perfect solution for this. A set of tiny speakers that went all around the bezel would be impractical and probably ugly. Moving it anywhere else still has similar problems. The best solution is wireless headphones, but we don't always have those, do we?

Alas, it's a "problem," but not a big one.

how about turning it 180°?

Dammit. I clicked 'No', thinking you meant to have it on the multitask bar. Surely you mean the Status Bar?
I agree, it's a great idea. There's a lot of unused space up there on an iPad. Things could get a bit cramped on an iPhone, but I guess it could be a toggled choice.
