A name like Ninja Chicken HD might have you believing this is a game of badass Bruce Lee style chicken combat. For those of you looking to hone those chopstick fly catching abilities might need to move along. If youre looking for a game with master ninja chickens, pigs of doom, and evil robot chickens then you need to read on.
Ninja Chicken resolves to dragging colored Ninja Chickens to their corresponding clan color mat. This sounds really simple and easy at first. Of course, the game cannot be that easy. Ninja Chicken throws in a few exploding robot chickens and pigs carrying umbrellas just to destroy your finger exercises.
The single player game consists of eight stages. Each stage will have chickens coming into play from conveyor belts. The clan mats are then positioned in different locations depending on the stage.
There are three stars of completion for each stage. The first completion star is just getting those ninjas to their correct mats. The second completion star is much the same, only this time the chickens come at you at a faster rate of speed. The third star will vary. Sometimes two mats will change to black and white. This forces a bit of memory action on you. The other situation will be when two mats will change location. Quick thinking skills are a must here.
Varying difficulty levels rounds out the last bit of the single player experience. Those who think this game wont tie their fingers into knots need to try the master difficulty.
There are two ways to play multiplayer on Ninja Chicken. The first is a co-op game. Each player has only two colors to be concerned with, but the chickens come at you in a much faster fashion. This is a light hearted fun way to play with your significant other, or even bring in your kids for some good fun.
Versus mode is much like the co-op mode, but with a bit of battle tactics thrown in. Pigs will come at both players. The goal is to throw these pigs at the person. This causes their scores to drop. The player with the highest score wins.
One more mode that just got added in a free patch goes by the name of Egg Mode. This mode drops colored eggs onto the screen. These eggs hatch and it is up to you to quickly get the chickens to their corresponding locations. What makes this hard is that the eggs dont always match the ninjas hidden inside. Egg mode carries on to the other modes as well. Colored eggs will be scattered throughout all your battles in single player, co-op, and versus modes. These eggs can be turned on, or off, as you deem necessary.
All this finger knotting fun looks and runs like a champ on the iPad. Vibrant colors make it easy to determine what ninja goes where. Each chicken has their own specialized way of warping off the board. Best of all, in all that chaos that is color matching, not a hit of a framerate drop happens.
That is not to say Ninja Chicken is not without some issues. The biggest issue is that the game does not always recognize that your chicken is in on the colored mat. This leads to combos breaking and loss of points. I also found that I would have to re-tap on a chicken to drag it. This then led to spurious tapping on those damn robot chickens. These are minor issues though.
Ninja Chicken HD is a fun game that offers up a bit of challenge and a whole lot of light hearted fun. There is a decent amount of fun that is only enhanced by great multiplayer games. When you walk away from this game with your fingers in a square knot remember one thing, we told you so!
