Qi2 25W wireless charging has been officially announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), confirming its coming support for compatible iPhones. Qi2 was previously known only by its version number, Qi2.2, but the WPC's announcement indicates it will take the brand name Qi2 25W.

Currently, iPhones featuring MagSafe use Qi 2, the widely supported second-generation charging standard. With third-party chargers, Qi 2 maxes out at 15W – although iPhone 16 models support upgraded 25W MagSafe charging using an official 30W Apple charger.

The WPC doesn't specify which iPhone models will support Qi2 25W, but Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 models are almost certain to include out-of-the-box compatibility, based on regulatory filings for new MagSafe charger models. There's also a chance that iPhone 16 models could receive an update to support Qi2 25W, given the magnetic Qi2 standard is partly based on Apple's MagSafe design.

Expect iPhone-compatible third-party Qi2 25W chargers to become increasingly prevalent as we edge closer to the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup in September. Ugreen has already announced its MagFlow Magnetic Power Bank, which it claimed was first in the world to receive Qi2 25W certification from the WPC. Other accessory makers including Baseus and Anker have also announced early certification.
"The momentum building behind the next stage in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible," said Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC's Board of Directors. "Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of our members product designs."
Android phones are also expected to pick up support, including Samsung's flagship devices. In addition to faster charging, Qi2 25W offers improved magnetic alignment and charging efficiency compared to its predecessor.

I like the naming convention, provided there are no exceptions and companies actually follow it. Unlike USB PD/PPS, where specific capabilities (versions, voltages, etc.) are buried or even omitted from tech docs.

It’d be great to just buy a device and a puck that clearly say Qi2 25W, so you can count on 25W charging... at least at lower battery levels.

I do hope for some smaller, thinner qi2 magsafe battery packs. Most of the 5000mah ones currently on the market are still relatively thick. Also hopefully now that we've reached 25 watts for this iteration, the next version might finally up it to 50 watts, as the rumors were stating *this* version would do.

Another thing is that maybe some case makers could design magsafe cases where the case *itself* is being charged with a ribbon cable then going up into the phones USBC port to charge the phone more efficiently. Currently, magsafe charging with a case means the wireless power has to travel through 2mm of plastic to reach the phone. But if the case itself could be charged directly and then pass that energy into the phones USBC port, it might also help to improve charging rates.

I really don’t need faster inductive charging. I use it on the desk and near the bed where I have nice stands. If I ever need fast, I’ll can easily handle the inconvenience of plugging it in.

But I’m so happy MagSafe has become an industry standard. It makes the ecosystem so much richer. I wish Apple would donate the Watch charging as Qi mini or whatever.

Having recently purchased the 25W MagSafe charger from Apple, I hope that they can add Qi 2.2 support via a firmware update.

Otherwise, it will be the shortest lived Apple product up to date.

does original magsafe charger charge qi2 devices ( i.e. non iPhones )? If not then I don't see why they would update anything

I can appreciate what you're saying, Qi is mostly fast enough for me, but I'm home a lot. Qi2 25W will convince more users and hopefully phone makers to adopt the standard, some people are always on the go. Would like to see Qi2 25W magnetic standard adopted by the auto industry. Yet to see a single car maker adopt Qi2. Preferably with two below the dash and one on the back of each seat. Everyone has a phone, it's time.

In the product picture, the clock should not be sideways in portrait orientation. A locked iPhone on its side should be in Standby mode.

Pretty careless of their publicity department. It's a fundamental feature of chargers like this that they turn the charging phone into a desk clock. Showing otherwise is silly.

But you can turn Standby off and have portrait orientation lock enabled.

I try to never use it because it decimates the battery. I limit my phone to 80% (i'd do 60 if I could) and at least at night, only charge via 5W.

How do you figure: "...shortest lived Apple product up to date?" It does what you bought it to do, right?
