My dad's friend gave me vpm 5 with windows xp but he didnt give me
the serial code for windows xp. the cd is NOT burned. what can i do?

You'll need the licence for it, with the serial number. The CD doesn't mean anything in terms of you owning it legally. It is that little certificate that you get with it.

Well the certificate of authenticity is what has the SN on it, and that proves ownership. That's the catch there: You would need that in order to prove you own it and possibly get a new serial number, but also if you had it, you would have the serial number. Pretty lame, isn't it.

Don't worry, that feeling is normal. That is why you bought a Mac, remember?

Edit: Off topic, but I have to say it: I just installed the latest version of Mandrake Linux on my PC the other day, I have to say I was blown away by how much easier it was to use and install than the linuxes of just a year or 2 ago. And my experience with OS X makes it so much easier to get under the hood.

It is not legal to give you somebody else's serial number, and it probably will not work anyways with M$'s new licence-checking scheme. If I were you I would contact the guy you got the cd from and tell him you need the serial number

If you have the CD and your not giving it back than I think this site will help you out. .trinsic.org Its a great site for when you cant find that serial number for something you own.
