I've been thinking about getting 1Password Families. I have a license for the Mac and iOS app that's grandfathered, but the Mac app is pretty out of date and doesn't work with Safari anymore or support dark mode, and I'd like to be able to keep certain passwords updated with my wife who is really bad about keeping things updated in her 1Password. It would be nice to be able to admin a shared vault and then setup some vaults for our kids as they get older. I worry about my wife not being able to access things if something were to happen to me. I just hate signing up for yet another service. I mean, for crying out loud, Paste is charging me yearly just to access my clipboard, even if it is only $10/yr. I like keeping a tidy budget.

I hear you. I was in the same boat, with grandfathered apps and not wanting to do the subscription. What finally tipped it for me was the need to assist my elderly parents. My father had a brain incident and we spent a TON of time trying to decipher his password "code" sheet and resetting passwords. I finally got the family subscription and created a shared vault for my mom to create/update all of their account information in and gave access to my parents, myself, and my brother. Now either of us can help my mom when she needs something and I still have my family stuff separately. You can take a little of sting about a subscription away by taking advantage of the offer above, and also buying a $125 gift card for $99. https://1password.com/giftcards/

They didn't have a free trial when I changed my account to a subscription, but I emailed them and they gave me a big savings on the first year of my subscription. Their support has always been top-notch in my experience.

Lastly, to anyone with aging parents, I HIGHLY recommend you have some form of password "hand-off" planned. The world has become so digital that being able to access online resources is almost a necessity.

Thank you so much for posting your thoughts. You are absolutely correct about aging parents. I am an aging parent. I have worked in the IT sector since the early 1980's. I retired twenty years ago, I now struggle to stay abreast of new updates and the proliferating number of passwords needed to access everything. I purchased 1Password before Apple had their own solution. I still use it for my Windows computers but not for OS X. I really should simplify and convert my Keychain stuff to 1Password, and share with my family. Granting access to your family is like a codicil to your Will. When you pass-away there is an enormous amount of important digital stuff that must be passed down to your children. Don't automatically assume they know how to access this information.

I’m a 1Password user and have been a big fan for nearly a decade, but have no interest in the subscription model. Since they aren’t going away from that payment model I‘m switching over to Apple’s keychain and have been slowly doing that over the past years. It’s nice to have a backup system in place and the ability to abandon an entire system if I need to. If AgileBit gains the agility to add the option of “pay once to use“ model in addition to their subscription model they’ll gain me back as a customer.
