Write Caching on Lepoard?

I was just moving a bunch of files from my laptop hdd to my external and finder decided to crash, the mouse would not even move and i had to hold the power button to shut it down. This got me thinking about write caching in OS X. Is it enabled by default? For what kinds of drives (usb flash drives, USB external hdd, internal hdd, internal ssd, etc) Is there a way to change these settings? Thanks
