For those of you that have 3rd party apps that are getting the wrong device name, I've confirmed this to be a bug in iOS 16 and have opened a ticket with Apple. This post starts my findings with screenshots of a sample app running on iOS 16 showing the wrong device name being retrieved in code vs the same sample app running on iOS15 which works.

It's not a bug, but intended as apps used the device name to fingerprint the user across devices and backups. Starting in iOS 16 the device name is reported as the device type instead.

"In iOS, the user-assigned device name is available in the Settings app under General > About > Name. To access the user-assigned device name through this property in iOS 16 and later, your app must meet certain criteria and be assigned an entitlement."

Appreciate you sharing this. Ive not been able to find that info anywhere. Guess I’ll wait for apps to be updated.

thank you.
