WTF? Battery died & I lost all my pics.. but they're still on the phone!

Photos shows 0 pictures, but it's still taking up 1 GB on my phone. How? And how did I lose everything from my battery dying?

What is going on here??
Is there any way to restore from iCloud?

What does the portable camera say when you plug it in the comp?

I would use juicephone to extract the photos out.
