I don't have an iPod touch, but my bro does and he wanted to update. I plug it in and the iTunes pops up and says it's $10 to update?
 
if you want the latest update (2.0 and up) which gives you much more capabilites. and the biggest thing is access to the itunes app store which allows you to download and use apps on your ipod which is very fun and useful.

my advice. pay the 10 bucks cuz its worth it
