That just worked for me as well, so I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. I Ctrl+click (right-click) on selected text and then left-click on Copy. Heck, even right-clicking on Copy works, so I'm not sure what's going on for you.
When you right-click does a little menu come up but copy is not on the menu? If that doesn't happen then try lifting your finger completely off the left side of the mouse before right clicking.

If it's a weblink you can usually just drag and drop it our of the window it's in right to where you want to paste it...one more reason why OS X is awesome.
