If I worked customer service and had someone call to interrogate me over a preorder time that I likely don't even know, I'd most definitely string them along to waste as much time as possible, then give them an intentionally wrong time out of spite.

Mostly because I have a great amount of disdain for people who demand things and act entitled. :)

no need to lie, a simple we do not know yet or call back tomorrow and we may know would suffice. But giving random incorrect information is not a good way to go.

did you think to call back and talk to someone else? why would anyone on macrumors know better than them?

I don't see why you are so concerned..it's not like the mini will sell out quickly like the iPhone 5 or something.

Aren't you being paid to tell people these things (if you know) or tell them that you don't know (if you don't know)?

Wasting a customer's time just reflects poorly on you and your company.

If I were working customer service, I imagine I'd be a few days away from an intentionally messy suicide, so I really doubt I'd care about anything mentioned.

Hypothetical, of course. I'd never work customer service under any circumstances.

OP should have searched and see what time past iPad preorders started.
When have past preorders started?
I couldn't believe the iPhone sold out so soon. I expected 7-8 hours. No way did I imagine 55 minutes.

The basic M.O. for those who want to pre order online seems to be (from my personal experience in the past) - keep an eye on the Apple website and wait until the store goes down. Then hang about here until someone tells you it has come back up. Or take advantage of some of the twitter / web / whatever services that will tell you when it has come back up. Or add to the server bashing and refresh the store yourself. Then you will know what time pre orders start. Then participate in the frenzy of pre ordering.
Or don't.
;)

IME of previous Apple product launches, pre orders have started anything from on the turn of midnight on the day stated, or eight am on the day stated. Or somewhere in between.

You'll be an hour too early. Remember that the US uses Daylight Saving Time, so I assume you guys aren't in the country right now. I'd shoot for midnight PDT / 3am EDT instead.
