Have they announced if there will be a live stream for this?

Also, I haven't watched too many Mac launch keynotes (providing they do launch new MacBooks)

What route does Apple normally take with Mac launches that do have an event?
Do they take a path similar to the iPhone and take preorders for a launch of 1-2 weeks after the event. Or do they generally do the "ships today" style launch?

Most likely won't be a live stream, if you want to keep up with the news you'll have to follow the blogs.

Usually with Mac updates they're available online the same day, by the end of the week at the latest.

Do they allow the educations discounts straight from release? Or do you have to wait a few weeks/months?

The education discount is always available. $100 off Mac's). If your asking about the back to school promotion, that should begin any day now (probably after WWDC).
