Hello Ladies and Gentlemen!

I have recently got interested in open source programs like neo-office and gimpshop.

When installing Gimpshop, it is recomended NOT to download the X11 from apple.com (for some reason), and instead use the installation DVDs that came together with my mac (Mac Book, Black, 2 GB ram). "X11user.pkg" is said to be found in the system folder on these DVDs.

Well, I cannot find any system folder on my DVDs. Probably cause I am too much of an amateur on this area. In the system folder on my mac, there is a file called X11-somehing.pkg, but not X11user.pkg.

Does anyone of you people know how to find this file, and sucessfully install gimpshop?

friendly,
:D Harald

Hi, Harold. This is quite easy. You are looking for a newer version of X11 than the one that is hosted on Apple's site. It is indeed on the Installation DVDs. I will show you how to find it (assuming it's an Intel Mac, but I'm pretty sure X11 would be on the PPC Mac install CDs as well).

On the installation CDs (it should be the first one), System->Installation->Packages->X11user.pkg

It is on the CD, you need to scroll down in the CD folder that pops up when you insert the CD. You can also take it into a much more Windows-column view which would show the System folder on the CD without any scrolling. There is a folder there called System.

still problems..

Thank you very much for helping!
there is just one thing: when I put in the "MacBook Mac OS X Install Disc 1", I cannot find a system folder. There is probably something basically I havent understood yet. But anyway, can anyone tell me which steps I have to follow to reach the system folder on the Install Disc, to ultimately find the golden X11-file?

Once you scroll all the way down, you'll see some folders about optional installs. X11 is one of those packages.
