I just downloaded x11 from apple and installed it on my iMac G5. It won't open. I click it and it closes before even one bounce in the dock. What's wrong? perhaps something conflicting with fink?

Noo. I'm completely familiar with what it does and how to use it but X11.app won't open for me. As in, I don't get an xterm to type in. I get nothing.

It should open and give you a command prompt. Did you try repairing permissions? That problem happens every once in a while to an app but I don't really know how to fix it.

Your iMac G5 came with Panther. Panther already has X11 installed.

/Applications/Utilities/X11.app

Why reinstall it?

Fink may well be getting in the way. Did you previously install the X11 package from Fink? If so, I'd remove the Fink package and the OS X package and then install the OS X package fresh. If I remember, Fink has some guidelines on how to keep things straight between Fink and OS X X11.

Actaully x11 wasn't installed on my iMac for some reason and I couldn't find a package on the dvds.. so I downloaded it.
I had installed xfree86 off fink a while before I had installed Apple's x11 so I'm thinking that could have been the problem. I'll try a reinstall now that I got rid of xfree86..

on another note, there used to be a package called system-xfree86 or something. Is it just me or is fink lacking it now?

system-xfree86 is a placeholder for your 3rd party install of X11.

I am frankly shocked that X11 wasn't on your Mac or your installer DVD.

Dump XDarwin, remove /usr/X11R6, remove /etc/X11, reinstall the Apple X11.

X11 is not installed by default on any Mac. It is only included on the install CDs for you if you do a custom install. Also, the Developer Tools install X11.

Damnit, you are completely right. It IS a custom install, something I do to every box that comes across my desk. Thanks for the reminder!
