X11 installed in /opt/X11/ but can't point to it in Finder

Hello all,

I'm trying to get the GIMP and WireShark (among others) working in Mavericks.

As suggested, I reinstalled X11 into /opt/x11 but when I run GIMP or WireShark, I am presented with a file dialog to find X11.app. However, /opt isn't shown in the file hierarchy from in this dialog.

Is there a workaround? Should I create an accessible symlink in /Applications? There doesn't seem to be an option to reinstall X11 to a different location.
