I've seen alot of discussion about this topic, but I was wondering if anyone could provide a few more specific details...

I understand that while both cards have 512mb of VRAM, the 8800GT has a faster core clock speed (which makes it better for most tasks, etc.)

However, on apples site, they still tout the X1900 as the best card for apps such as Motion 3, Color, and FCP. Is there any reason why? I've heard a few rumors about how the ATI card's drivers or firmware (or something:confused:) makes it more efficient for apps such as color, etc.

The proof I have for this is the Barefeats page where an X1900xt, an R2600, and an 8800GT were paired off for common tasks such as gaming and FCS2 (http://www.barefeats.com/harper8.html).
What amazes me about these tests is that the X1900 was twice as fast as the 8800GT when rendering a Motion RAM preview. Is this conclusive proof that the X1900 is better for some tasks involving the FCS2 suite??

Here is a thread posted on the official Apple Boards discussing this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6664814

Anyways, does anyone have any other good comparisons of these two cards? I am primarily wondering which one would be better for the FCS2 suite, but would also like to know how much better the 8800GT is for gaming.

Just off the top of my head, I can say that the X1900XT drivers are mature while the 8800GT drivers are newish, so they haven't yet unlocked the full potential of the newer card.

It would be driver maturity. The 1900xt is an outdated piece of ****, and it's a total disgrace that Apple is even still selling it. It's three generations old now.. the Radeon 3870 costs 2/3 as much as they're selling the 1900 for, and is practically twice as fast... and is DX10.1, not DX9.0c.

So yes, if those apps are critical to you, get the 1900xt (though perhaps see if others are successful in using 3850/70s in their Pros and if they're faster). If not, get the 8800 GT, and wait a bit; they ought to smoke it soon enough.

Their architectures are radically different by this time, actually.

Nvidia's drivers (for 7300GT & Quadro) haven't supported 10/12/16-bit rendering ever in FCS2's Color, so I believe that they will never mature for that.
