xBackup question

If you make backups of your JB phone on a regular basis (meaning just to safeguard against a virus or system failure rather than prior to upgrading firmware) then can you explain in semi-laymens terms what steps you follow to do that?

Whenever I see a description of backing-up using xBackup, it seems that it's done just prior to changing the IOS.

For Iphone 4S 5.0.1
