Spreads through online play of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. It would be best to wait for a patch before playing on live. If you do have it most times a restart will solve your issues.

Restarting the console gets rid of the virus? Sounds more like an induced burp than an infection.

Its more a proof-of-concept more than an actual virus. Pretty cool if you ask me, but i would be worried that malicious code doesnt start to spread. We all know how MS is with security

So it's a bit like the iPhone virus that was written? No harm intended but just there to prove it can be done?

Except no one claims to be responsible and we still dont know the long term effects it could in theory be a bot attack even after a restart imagine if they had to do a massive recall.

Knew this day would come. And it's very early days, God knows what there is to come.

Time to look smug with my virus clean PS2.

I remember plenty of hacks, glitches and exploits on PS2 games. Once again, there isn't a virus on the XBOX or PS3.

uhuh.... I'm sure
The PS2 only had about 100 games for network play. And only around 25% of them had online servers. And call of duty 2 was the only decent one.

Bring it on hack/glitch/exploit. I haven't even got the network adapter. Good luck in trying to get on my PS2.

though this MW2 exploit isn't really a virus compared to what computers can get.

I've got the feeling it may just be the beginning. I'm sure someone will make one which steals people's xbox live account details.

Of course not, this is the very first time this has ever happened on any console (that i can remember at least). Its not going to be spectacular, but its amazing it even works at all. Im certain the very first windows exploit was nothing astonishing. Imagine what damage could be done if these guys could gain control of the OS. They could shut off the fans and RROD your box while you play a game, they could erase your hdd, they could steal your xbl account...
I hope MS realizes how important it is that they stop this kind of thing from happening, and i hope they realize they cant stop it by simply banning a few hundred thousand modded 360s.

FYI there has been hacks that erase your hard drive however you have to have a modded system. So majority are still safe.

The PSP had a sort of virus that would brick a modded PSP, which was found in some homebrew apps. Sony also released an anti-virus app for official PSPs too.

Thats not a virus though, it doesnt spread without user interaction. You have to download the eboot, put it on your memeory card, and run it in order for it to brick your psp. For the 360 thing all you have to do is play MW2 online.

Doesn't sound like a virus at all. The article you linked to called it a "Quasi-virus"

I'm 99% confident that we will never see a virus on Xbox 360, because all the code that it runs is signed. Unless you mod your xbox to run unsigned code, or some devious company manages to sneak a virus into a real product that gets properly signed, viruses just simply are not possible.

I forgot to mention, I experienced this not long after reading about it here, me and a friend entered a game where one player alone had over 400 kills and 200 deaths, the score for the game read 1320something - 800something, it was incredibly surreal, it was a free for all match (despite us entering team deathmatch), the next 3 games we entered were all the same, trying to find team death match game, got put in a capture the flag game, again, with 1000s of kills as the scores. Have yet to see anything since, the only thing to note was all the games were 16 player and on rust, so it was incredibly packed, you'd die instantly.

I experienced the same exact thing yesterday. I went to Team Deathmatch, and it put me in Free for All on Rust, and it was weird. I noticed I was on Free-for-all when people on my "team" started killing me, and I could kill them. Then, I exited, and went on Team Deathmatch again, yet the same thing happened. I was on Rust again.

I had the same thing! But I tried to get into 3rd person team tactical I think. But it took me to a private match on rust with like 30 people. All it was, was spawn trapping. No 2000 kills people though. It was legit.
