I’ll be honest I’m a germaphobe. My XDR stand just updated and is being shipped from Shanghai China and the Nano display was just billed so I expect that to have its origin soon..... Now I’m caught up in the hoopla and worried about the Corona Virus showing up in 2 boxes at my home.... I read this and it was not very reassuring. The stand shipped yesterday and is suppose to arrive Thursday.

Another article says possibly 9 days... and who is to say that a fed ex employee in china flying here doesnt have it. Lots of what if’s. What steps has apple and FedEx taken to ensure clean packages. I would assume that if there was a reasonable risk that packages would stop coming from China to the US or is the risk so small its not worth stopping all packages and the economic damage? I will leave it in my garage but do i spray the box with lysol disinfectant aerosol spray? Do I handle the box with gloves? Seems sketchy
 
I am in Hong Kong, I bet I have most of the up to date info for this coronavirus (especially I can read both English and Chinese info).

Our understanding so far, this virus should not able to stay "alive" for more than 4 days. Or course, according to statistic, it's possible to have virus can still active after 9 days, but the possibility should be very low.

Also, the factory should be dust free, with positive pressure, everyone have to wear mask. The chance of having active virus on the display should be extremely low.

IMO, what you really have to care about is just the box. And you can simply wipe the box with alcohol (75% or above). With this simple precaution, I think you are safe enough.

I don't think that you need to handle that with gloves because of the virus. Of course, you can still wear gloves anyway just to avoid accidentally leave finger print on the monitor.

If you worry about your hand may touch the virus (on the box) even after you clean it with alcohol, all you need to do is just avoid touch you eyes etc when you hand is "contaminated". After you take the display out, throw the box into the garage, and clean your hands. Then you will be fine.

This virus is danger, but not that ridiculous. If you do all the above still get infected in US, our Hong Konger should be all dead by this time. Basically all we need to do is just wear mask in public area, and clean our hands regularly.

IMO, the US gov is doing very well to control this disease. If they believe that FedEx package is safe, then most likely it is very safe already. Of course, you should still do your part to protect yourself. But no need to be worry too much.

h9826790 thankyou for your reply. It sounds like the brown shipping box is the main concern. I wonder why it is not a concern to FedEx. They are allowing there pilots to not fly to China so there must be some reasonable worry there. Regarding the packages are they fumigating them in China or on arrival or is the temperature or humidity capable of killing the virus on the plane? Im just curious why people are not worried. This package could arrive to me In the US 48 hours after leaving China. I also live in a hot humid climate which I have read can keep the virus alive.

If the workers in China, either for FedEx, UPS or the Foxconn, shown symptoms of sickness, they won't even be allowed to walk on the street at this time, so contamination from such source is extremely low, not to mention the cargo planes used by carriers such as FedEx and UPS do not carrier human, only packages, make the chance of contamination from human even lower. And they all wear masks on duty as mentioned above.

But if you are so worried about it, please cancel your order now so I can have my sooner lol. The ETA is so long for XDR and BTO Macs that I'll have to wait till March.

Maybe they're taking longer because either government now holds the package longer before sending it out.

AFAIK, the only thing they did was checking the exporting/importing packages for masks and other medical supplies. They'll confiscate them when found. That took a bit longer but not that long. The waiting was mainly caused by worker shortage as most of them can't go to work due to government orders.

Yeah, this is the theory. This virus mainly spread by droplets. Therefore, when temperature rises, the droplet will be evaporated faster, and the virus will be “killed” faster.

This is exactly what happened during SARS.

When SARS hit Hong Kong back in 2003, there is nothing can stop it, until summer arrives, then the disease stopped by itself.

However, this time, from the cases of Singapore (a very hot country), people start to worry about if high temperature can really stop this disease. But at least no evidence to show that high temperature can keep this virus “alive” longer.

This is a little ridiculous. A virus needs a host to survive and won’t survive outside of the body. So how is it going to live on an inanimate object.

Absolutely no need to worry about that. Source: Me. I have a PhD in biochemistry, and I just spend the last 6 years working on a viral vaccine.

That's under practically perfect conditions. Even 5 days is stretching it a LOT under real life conditions.

How do you think most pathogenic viruses spread? Of course they can survive outside the body for short periods of time.

Put a mask on and then wipe down all of the surfaces with alcohol, then take the mask off. The fact that you indicate you are a germaphobe indicates that you understand the issue may simply be in your head, few others, including me, will understand.

Make sure to regularly wash your hands or apply isopropyl alcohol. Another key is having a strong immunity system. There were people who recovered from this virus. Below is a video from a pulmonologist doctor about how the Coronavirus attacks and the importance of a strong immune system.

It came... said it left Shangai at 9:45PM and my door rang at 9:45AM. Brought the box in with gloves.... my hair brushed box but I restrained myself from washing my hair and said F-it. But the stand is in my garage waiting until the Display shows up March 4th...... probably will freak out about that too. But i will want to open that soooo bad

Yea my stand is in transit now arrives Thursday and I was thinking of doing the same thing just leave box in garage until display comes March 9th

Box is still in the garage. Waiting on display, they charged me today so hopefully that means its coming soon....if it comes from China I'm letting that sit for a few days aswell
